Opening Shots at The Trough
Just somewhere on the inter-web I can deposit my… pensées (?). Difficult to grasp how I feel about anything until I put in down on virtual paper (via scrivener). Thanks to retired Prof. Ian Smith for his encouragement. [I’m sure he does something similar in material form.] So here it goes…Es muss sein!
….Like something out of a Don Delillo novel… WordPress takes up an estimated 30% of the internet. But alongside the virtual shopping mall and virtual newspaper stand, there must be the virtual junk-yard, slag-heap, cess-pit, waste-pipe, man-hole-cover, landfill…Perhaps this will be like some gleaming jewel amongst the scrapped metal and explosive driers, pilled up in stacks. Perhaps not.

But nil desperandum! As ancient yogi Patanjali tells us, “to dedicate the fruits of ones work to God is to work with non-attachment”. In other words, it doesn’t really matter, at all, whether you succeed or not.

How delicious: Patanjali is now a company selling health food.
A Word on Ethos
One of my favourite contemporary writers of non-fiction Mark O’Connell has said that he is in fact ambivalent about most things. I was in the bath when I heard this. It was an epiphany! I sat up covered in bubbles and said yes, ‘the best’ DO ‘lack all conviction’ – why should they be convicted!? Why not be honest and confused. Convicted people scare me, how can they be so sure? Do they have access to some divine knowledge I cannot?
With this in mind I enter the trough, to gorge on that wonderfully modern commodity, ‘culture’, or more accurately, ‘content’. Yes, I shall eat content. Pleasure begins in the mouth after all.
Things this Blog (shudder) May Cover
- Adventures in the spiritual void. Something between cynical appraisal and sincere apology.
- Food and drink. The only thing in the world worth taking seriously.
- Buildings, or as we say now ‘the Built Environment’.
- Plays, films, books, music, etc. etc. yawn.
Relationships or as we say now, ‘partners’.
